This Madagascar Bullseye is adorned in UV-protected, anti-reflective Art Glass and Sterling Silver. Our local glass artisan and goldsmith spent hours crafting this piece, carefully adapting to the unique shape of this wing. As a result, no traditional casting molds were used, only handcrafted techniques. It is truly a labor of love and a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry!
About this beauty:
The Madagascar Bullseye (Antherina suraka) is one of those creatures that seems like it was dreamed up in a moment of wild creativity. An extraordinary silk moth native to Madagascar, a place where 70 million years of isolation gave the evolution of nature free rein to get wonderfully weird. And the Bullseye is a perfect example of that.
With its rich colors and bold patterns, this moth knows how to make an entrance. She has a large, dramatic eyespot on each hindwing, like a pair of watchful eyes peeking out from behind a curtain. What makes it even more fascinating is its party trick: it can move its hindwings separately from its forewings, flashing her "eyes" in a rocking motion: something that startles predators from attacking them.
The colors feel like they’ve been borrowed from a warm desert evening, with soft pinks blending into dusty browns and sandy tones.
Sourcing:
All the butterflies we work with have been sourced and prepared with the utmost care and responsibility. They have lived their full lifespan and passed naturally. Learn more here.
Important note:
Make sure your jewelry stays completely dry. Water can seep beneath the glass and cause serious damage to the butterfly wing inside. This may result in moisture build-up or visible condensation, which can harm the organic material and accelerate deterioration. Keeping your piece dry is essential to preserving its natural beauty.
