This Madagascar Sunset Moth is adorned in UV-protected, anti-reflective Art Glass and Sterling Silver. Our local glass artisan and goldsmith spent hours crafting this piece, carefully adapting to the unique shape of this wing. As a result, no traditional casting molds were used - only handcrafted techniques. It is truly a labor of love and a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry!

About this beauty:
The Madagascar Sunset Moth (Urania rhipheus) is often considered one of the most beautiful moths in the world - and with good reason. In Madagascan folklore, colorful insects like this are seen as messengers from the spirit world. Because Urania rhipheus is active during the day and stands out from other moths, it is often seen as a “magical creature” - a butterfly with a higher purpose. In Madagascar, it’s known as Adriandolo or Lolonandriana, names that combine the words lolo (meaning 'spirit' or 'butterfly') and andriana ('noble'), translating to “noble butterfly” or “noble spirit.”

Its wings reflect light in vibrant colors that shift as it moves, creating a beautiful visual effect. But beauty, in this case, comes with a warning. Those dazzling wings aren’t just for show - they’re nature’s way of saying “stay back.”  As caterpillars, they feed on the green leaves of the Omphaela plant, which makes them poisonous as adults. Interestingly, the silk produced by the caterpillars can cause a euphoric high if consumed. A moth with a psychedelic touch! A little surreal, a little rebellious: this moth doesn’t just break the rules, it rewrites them :)

Sourcing:
All the butterflies we work with have been sourced and prepared with the utmost care and responsibility. They have lived their full lifespan and passed naturally. Learn more here.

Important note:
Make sure your jewelry stays completely dry. Water can seep beneath the glass and cause serious damage to the butterfly wing inside. This may result in moisture build-up or visible condensation, which can harm the organic material and accelerate deterioration. Keeping your piece dry is essential to preserving its natural beauty.
